Today is Thanksgiving. For the past two years I have been fortunate to get back to New York, where I grew up, to celebrate with my extended family. We stay with my sister and her family and the night before we spend the evening cooking together. While many of our recipes are similar there is always some negotiation about what goes into the homemade cranberry sauce and whether the sweet potatoes are topped with pecans or mini marshmallows (my kids favourite).
In addition to eating lots of food and watching the Macy’s day parade on TV it’s above all a day to take time to reflect on what we are truly thankful for. As my parents get older I feel very thankful to be able to take time out and travel to be with them. My dad is incredible, at 86 he still loves working as a supply teacher at a secondary school. He enjoys the people he works with and the kids. Working keeps him young.
Like my dad, I am extremely lucky to work with fantastic people and I feel grateful to the team at ENS who with humour and laughter share the challenges of running a business where there are never enough people to meet the demands of providing health and social care. If we could just clone our amazing care and nursing staff! Every day our staff do the incredibly hard job of delivering life changing care to hundreds of people. Today I want to acknowledge and say thank you to each of the compassionate, hardworking people who are the heart and soul of what we do at ENS.
Whether or not you are celebrating Thanksgiving today we’d love to hear what you are thankful for.
For those who are celebrating Thanksgiving have a great day and for those who have to wait until Christmas to eat turkey I hope you also have a fantastic day!
