Re-validation was introduced in April 2016 to replace the PREP requirements and it is the process by which all UK nurses and midwives maintain their NMC registration and demonstrate that they are practising safely and effectively. The requirement for re-validation is every 3 years and an online submission is required.
We thought we would ask our very own Sally Fitzsimons, RGN, for her experiences of re-validation and any tips she has for nurses. Sally has been a nurse for 35 years and has worked at ENS as our Nurse Recruitment and Compliance Officer for 11 years! So here is Sally’s first-hand experience with re-validation –
“Re-validation is NOT as big and scary as you think it is going to be – in reality it is just an extension of PREP which we are all used to completing. I was one of the first group of nurses to re-validate in April 2016 and I honestly found the whole process to be easy and stress free.”
In essence the requirements are as follows:
If you are working as an agency nurse rather than in a substantive role, the requirements are no different and in fact you could find many parts easier, as you have so much more varied experience to draw on for the reflective pieces.
To get started all you need is an NMC Online account www.nmc.org.uk/nmc-online. You can use NMC Online to find out your renewal date and find out more about re-validation. All the forms and templates your need are online and can be downloaded www.nmc.org.uk/revalidation. You will need to submit your application through the online portal.
So don’t leave it until the last minute, it is just a big word for something that all nurses and midwives are used to doing throughout their usual working practice.
